When you spend months building two brand new routines, the hardest part isn’t the work. It’s showing people what the work actually looks like.
Drum Majoring doesn’t photograph easily. The precision lives in the detail — the flourish, the timing, the way a line holds its shape while the music carries underneath it. Add The Kilted Dance Company into the mix and you have two disciplines moving as one, telling a story across an arena. Describing that in words only gets you so far. You need to see it.
That’s where Matthew Wilson and Aperture NI came in.
Matthew joined us at rehearsals ahead of the Musikfest der Bundeswehr in Düsseldorf, and the footage he produced has genuinely changed how we present ourselves. His drone work lifts the camera to where the shapes and formations read properly — the view an audience in the stands gets, which no ground-level camera can replicate. On the ground, he caught the things we’d normally only feel: the mace work, the footfall, the moment a dancer and a drum major land the same beat.
What struck us just as much was how he worked. He understood the brief straight away, he was unobtrusive around a live rehearsal, and the turnaround was fast. When we came back afterwards and asked for alternate edits with the event-specific text removed, so the footage could work across our wider marketing material, he had them with us the same day and without a moment’s fuss. That kind of service is rare, and it’s the reason we’ll be using him again.
